Often, people get to a certain age, and feel that that are too old to start learning a new sport. Although you may need to think a little more about which sports you are mostly likely to enjoy, it is important to remember not to let your age put you off taking up a new hobby or activity.

It is true that many professional sportsmen and women tend to have been training in their chosen sport since an exceptionally young age. However, this does not mean to say that older people should simply resign themselves to sports such as chess or online tournaments at PartyPoker.com – indeed, many younger competitors excel in these sports too! Whilst those who start practising a sport at a much later stage in life might be less likely to reach a professional status, this is no reason to say you shouldn’t take up a sport altogether.

There are, in fact, a huge number of sports clubs and teams which include members of all ages. In many sports, the age of a player may have very little impact on their ability to play. Of course, older people can sometimes find themselves more prone to certain medical issues, and sports which aggravate such problems should certainly be avoided. However, there are a huge range of sports out there, making it relatively easy to find one which is suited to the specific requirements of almost any individual.

In fact, it can be an extremely good idea for older people to take up a new sport. At any age, take part in regular sporting activities can be a good way to stay fit and healthy. It is always important to stay physically active, and perhaps even more so in later years. No matter what your age might be, there’s sure to be a sport in which you can enjoy and benefit from participating in.

There’s a Sport for Everyone

Sports offer a multitude of benefits to people of all ages and all walks of life. Playing sports not only improves cardiovascular health and prevents weight gain, but also helps people make friends, develop a sense of competition, and reduce stress. Most health experts recommend at least 30 or 60 minutes of physical activity each day, but few of us actually meet that target.

If you fall into this group, perhaps it’s time to liven up your routine and find a new sport (or several) that you’ll enjoy participating in regularly. No matter what part of the country you live in, or the type of climate, there’s a sport that can be played there. Find the perfect mix of indoor and outdoor sports to keep you in good physical health all year long.

Most people associate the word “sports” with traditional, competitive team sports that they may have played in high school. These can include football, soccer, basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, hockey, cricket, and tennis. But the fact that you’ve graduated from high school doesn’t mean that you can’t continue to play these traditional favorites. Sign up for your workplace team, or look for an amateur league that meets on weekends. This can be a great way to expand your professional network, make new friends, and enjoy your time off.
Traditional Individual Sports

For people who prefer to spend time alone or in small groups, or who can’t commit to the regular game schedule of a competitive team, individual sports are a good option. Speed walking, jogging, and running are traditional standbys, but they’re just the beginning. Road cycling and mountain biking, snowshoeing, skiing, and hiking are good ways to work out some tension while enjoying the great outdoors. Looking for a challenge? Try rock climbing. And if you live in an urban environment, roller skating, roller blading, ice skating, and skateboarding are good outdoor alternatives. If you enjoy the water, consider canoeing or kayaking on a nearby lake or river, or if you’re near the ocean give surfing a try. Of course, there’s always swimming, which is versatile for outdoor bodies of water or indoor pools. Once you have mastered the basics of swimming, consider signing up for a scuba diving class and then reward yourself with a vacation where you

If all the sports mentioned so far seem passé, you may want to look for an adrenaline rush with one of the many extreme sports that have recently been growing in popularity. They’re a little more expensive and require an investment in safety equipment, but they might be just what you’re looking for. If you don’t have a fear of heights, skydiving, plane jumping, hang gliding, and bungee jumping might fit the bill. If you like to take the action to the water, try kitesurfing, parasailing, whitewater rafting, or kayaking. Cave diving is another interesting option for exploring the depths. And, if you prefer extreme winter sports, check out snowboarding, ski jumping, and ice climbing.

John Kortex asked:

Is there a sport that you have always wanted to try out but just haven’t had the opportunity? Perhaps there was a sport that you really wanted to play but weren’t sure that you’d be good at? What are you waiting for, get out there and start playing! When we are young we often shy away from the sports that we don’t think we’ll be good at. Luckily, it’s never too late to try out a new sport. Who knows, when you try the sport that you’ve been waiting to try, you just might be really great at it.

When you consider trying a new sport you need to think about how much time you’ll be able to dedicate to the sport. Should you play on your own for a while until you gain the confidence to play with others? Do you want to be involved in a fun league or a competitive league? How often can you really fit this new sport into your life? When you answer all these questions you’ll be ready to play and you can find the place and the time to do it.

If you’ve really never played any sports before and you are ready to try something new, you’ll want to get with your doctor to discuss your overall health. Every time you are going to really change up what you are doing physically you’ll want to meet with your doctor to discuss your exercise regime so that you are adding sports to your life in the best way possible. Your doctor can make sure that your body is ready for such a sport, and also give you pointers if you are incorporating the sport to lose weight and get in shape as well as for fun.

Fun leagues are often the best way to get into a new sport. These leagues usually are not very competitive at all, so there is no pressure to get really good right away. You can learn the sport, practice with people who will be able to give you pointers, and sort of work your way into a comfortable place. Once you get comfortable with the sport, you might want to think about joining a more competitive league. Or, stick with the fun leagues to just have fun, and keep moving while playing your new sport.

Trying out a new sport can be a bit scary, but it should also be exciting. Don’t worry if you aren’t all star material when you first start playing, just be proud of yourself for getting out there and finally attempting what you’ve always been afraid to do! Playing sports is a great form of exercise and can boost your confidence in many areas of your life. Go out and attempt the sport that you’ve always wanted to play, you just might find that you are really good at it, it’s fun, and you’ll meet some great friends along the way, too.
